Winter is approaching, and that means it’s almost time to prepare your garden for winter. It might be tempting to let everything die and call it a day. However, there are a few things you can do to make sure that your life is easier this winter and in the coming spring. Consider taking up this advice, and you might just have a smooth transition from winter to spring next year.

Take Weeds Out of Your Garden

Just as you would clean up a car before storage, so too should you clean up and prepare your garden for winter. Take out any weeds that you’ve noticed over the season and toss them in the trash. The trash is the only place for weeds because they will take hold anywhere else you throw them. Plus, if you have any dead plants or leaves in your beds, it’s time to take those out as well. Dead plants can have any number of bad things attached to them, including diseases and insect eggs. None of these would be a good start for your spring season, and you’re giving yourself less work in the spring when you have much more to do.

Work on Your Compost Pile

Do you have a compost pile on your property? If not, now is the time to research! If you do, there are some things you can do to prepare your garden for winter to really get your compost pile working for you. First, if you have been diligently composting, you should have some that is ready to be used as fertilizer for your landscaping. This gives great results because of the nutrients. Next, it’s time to start or add to your fall compost. When you’ve finished, it should be insulated and should not have problems over the winter. For more information on composting, give us a call.

Mulch, mulch, mulch!

Isn’t mulch only for the summer? Not always! Mulch can be a great way to make the switch from fall to winter that much easier for your plants and landscaping. As we all know, those first few touches of frost are shocking to even our systems. Think about how your plants feel! To ease this, mulch around landscaping that will be left out and any winter vegetables that have been left for now. This will help to insulate the soil and even out the temperature. Plus, it will help protect the soil from being washed away when the snow melts and spring begins and will work to stop weeds in their tracks.
